Using Genre-Based Approach to Teach Persuasive Netvertisement for English Learners in a Chinese Vocational College

This paper is part of the researcher’s Ph.D. thesis to deploy and develop potential genre-based pedagogy systemic functional linguistics support business-major English language learners’ development persuasive strategies in written discourse online advertisement. Given “value” netvertisement motivating consumption, it vital for non-native speakers preparing participate international e-commerce take control current genre. The research question how a writing class can promote students’ with appropriate vocabulary, text organization, engagement, graduation, manipulation information packaging. describes an instructional intervention Chinese vocational college using Curriculum Cycle involve 51 student participants—coming from two classes—in learning teaching netvertisement. Results identified significant improvement between pre-and post-tutorial Wilcoxon Test. Meanwhile, textual analysis randomly selected writings supported effectiveness terms reduced listing phrases, expanded vocabulary describe broader range products, improved use engagement (e.g., questioning), graduation metaphorical scenario image design), subtitling, varied thematic structures). findings indicate approach promoting practices writing.
